The former Provincial Courthouse anchors the northeast corner of Kitchener’s civic precinct, established in the post-war era. The precinct includes the former jail, former registry office, library, County of Waterloo Courthouse, and theatre.
The building sits on a site of 0.4 hectares, and has 8,080 square meters disposed on three floors. Associated with Brutalism, its form is comprised of rectangular, flat-roofed volumes with interplay between solid (concrete) and void (windows). The high quality, poured-in-place concrete walls lend a sense of solidity and permanence, contributing to the civic presence of the courthouse.
Vacant since 2013, the building will be renovated to accommodate the Kitchener police detachment.
