St. Timothy’s Presbyterian Church

2400 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa, ON.
CONSTRUCTED 1963

St. Timothy’s Presbyterian is one of a series of post-war churches on Alta Vista Drive.  The building sits within a landscaped setting, in which a garden wall and a covered walk create a modern version of a cloister.

A monolithic gabled roof characterizes the church, and its slate cladding recalls earlier ecclesiastical architecture in Ottawa.  The modernity of the church is expressed in the exposed, painted steel arches, which extend beyond the fully-glazed east wall to form a monumental porch.  The building is also characterized by its open interior volume with mezzanine, exposed Ohio brick walls, and cedar ceiling; along with its interior elements including wooden pews, delicate organ-screen, and stained glass executed in dalle de verre.
