Stratford Public Utility Commission

187 Erie Street, Stratford , ON.
DESIGNER(S)
CONSTRUCTED 1959

Located at the edge of the city center on one of Stratford’s main streets, the Public Utility Commission features hallmarks of the period: a playful geometric composition, generous public spaces, abundant glazing, dramatic cantilevers, and modern materials such as terrazzo and glass block.

The Public Utility Commission was completed shortly after Stratford’s best-known building of the post-war era, the Massey gold medal-winning Festival Theatre (Rounthwaite and Fairfield).

Its landscaped front lawn, modest height and buff brick make the Public Utility Commission a compatible, mid-century modern building within Stratford’s 19th century historic center.
